What is Microlearning?
It’s often defined as short, easy to consume courses which can be delivered over any device, including mobile phones. But is that all that’s needed for learner engagement and retention? If you took a 20-minute SCORM course and converted it into four 5-minute modules instead, would that be a better experience for your learners? Would their engagement improve? Would their retention improve?
We don’t believe so. We believe that microlearning courses alone may make it easier to consume content on mobile devices, but won’t do much to improve retention.
Enter Adaptive Microlearning.
When adaptive microlearning is assigned to a learner:
- Their knowledge is rapidly assessed
- Their knowledge gaps are identified
- The training content delivered to them adapts to their knowledge gaps
However, adaptive microlearning isn’t the only thing you need for an effective retention campaign—it’s only one part of the Agile Microlearning philosophy, which is comprised of three elements:
- Microlearning structured content
- Adaptive algorithms to personalize content
- Subscription delivery of training over time
Microlearning Structured Content
Content must be broken down into its components—ideally as a knowledge map. This allows you to focus on the relationships between content areas.
Adaptive Algorithms to Determine Training Delivery
Once knowledge gaps are identified, learners should receive more practice on areas of weakness. The algorithms should work to identify and close knowledge gaps automatically.
Subscription Delivery Over Time
Instead of having learners sit down for a 20-minute module, engage them with daily 2-minute training sessions. Since the content adapts to each learner, they’ll rapidly close their knowledge gaps, and learners with more experience will reach their mastery goal sooner.
To really enjoy the benefits of Agile Microlearning, you must combine microlearning designed content and leverage adaptive microlearning, which makes the entire process intelligent by personalizing delivery for each learner as well as subscription learning to ensure that learners retain the knowledge over time.
